Expectations that summer fuel demand will reduce inventories and tighten the market in the third quarter, coupled with economic optimism in China, international oil prices rose to the highest since late April, WTI above $80 a barrel. On Monday (June 17), West Texas Light crude oil for July 2024 settled at $80.33 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, up $1.88, or 2.40%, from the previous trading day, with a trading range of $77.98-80.66; Ice Brent crude for August 2024 settled at $84.25 a barrel, up $1.63, or 1.97 percent, from the previous session, in a trading range of $82.1 to $84.55.

Analysts expect summer fuel demand to reduce inventories and tighten the market. Royal Bank of Canada's Helima Croft says the oil market is likely to get more nervous through the summer.

"The prospect of strong fuel demand in the coming quarter, as well as assurances from Saudi Arabia that an increase in production in October will depend on market conditions, and an increased focus on compensating national output cuts from over-quota production, appear to be supporting higher prices," Saxo Bank's Ole Hansen was quoted as saying by Reuters on Monday.

Reuters also reported that traders on Monday bought back oil they had sold last week after assurances from Opec and its Allies to cut production.
