MILAN, Oct 31 (Reuters) - Production at the Chevron-led (CVX.N) Angola liquefied natural gas (LNG) export project has been suspended for several weeks for the completion of minor modifications to reach the site's full capacity, the U.S. oil giant said on Friday.

"ALNG expects to restart the plant within the next couple of weeks and will continue to ramp up and fine-tune the system," Chevron's Chief Financial Office Patricia Yarrington said in the company's third-quarter earnings call.

Short shutdowns are commonplace as facilities are ramped up to full capacity, Yarrington said.

Angola LNG has been repeatedly shut for lengthy periods since it first started up in mid-2013, including a more than two-year shutdown from April 2014 to June 2016 to fix design flaws.

In late July it was shut again until late September for a planned phase of testing and maintenance to help it to ramp up to full capacity.

Yarrington added that the second production line, known as Train 2, at Chevron's $54 billion Gorgon LNG export scheme in Australia was online and producing LNG.

"Production is expected to ramp up over the coming months," she said.
