湘钢建造LNG储罐主要是使用9Ni钢，所需合金多，生产成本高。湘钢在近年来成功开发镍系低温钢基础上，加大研发力度，采用钢液真空处理、夹杂物变性处理等多项新工艺、新技术，成功开发出7Ni钢，成为全球少数能批量生产该钢种的企业。

湘钢是中国南方千万吨级的精品钢材生产基地，具备年产钢1200万吨生产规模，拥有炼焦、烧结、炼铁、炼钢、轧材等全流程的技术装备，主体装备、生产工艺行业领先。产品涵盖宽厚板、线材和棒材三大类1000多个品种，其中有33种产品获得国家和部、省级优质产品称号，12种产品获得国家冶金产品实物质量金杯奖，远销韩国、美国、日本等国家以及欧洲、南美洲、东南亚、中东等地区，在国际高端市场占有一席之地。
